JackRabbit at the Crossfit Games - with a Free Workout!

As a retailer rooted in run, it is often you will see our employees out on the road or trails soaking in some vitamin D on a long run. Rarely you find us in a gym fully stocked with weights, kettlebells, and ropes. However, at JackRabbit we believe in transforming movement into adventure, so a few of us at the office took an adventure to Madison, Wisconsin.

JackRabbit blogger Kenzi Kaplan shares her experience of a weekend with some of the crossfitters in the world!

Why Madison? Well every July thousands of people flock to this Northern state for the Reebok CrossFit Games to watch incredible athletes accomplish physical challenges from all sports backgrounds.

HOW THE CROSSFIT GAMES WORK

In order to qualify for the Reebok CrossFit Games, athletes from all over the world must participate in the CrossFit Open which takes place in the Winter prior to the games. Athletes as young as 14 are invited to participate and see how they compare against the rest of the competitors.

The top competitors from the CrossFit Open will move onto the next stage in the competition at the CrossFit Regionals. At Regionals, the athletes will push themselves through a series of workouts to earn their spot as one of the 40 men, 40 women, or 40 teams at the 2018 CrossFit Games.

If an athlete earns their spot as one of the top 40 competitors in their category, they qualify for the 2018 Games in Madison. Make no mistake, the hard work isn’t over. Each athlete must train for every possible scenario at the CrossFit Games, because one element added to the games is the unknown.

MUM’S THE WORD. HOW CROSSFIT KEEPS IT INTERESTING

Dave Castro, the mastermind behind the CrossFit Games, loves to keep the athletes on their toes. Several events that the athletes will compete in are kept secret until just before the games, and in some cases, just before the event starts.

To be crowned “The Fittest On Earth” you must be skilled in almost every aspect of sport. At this year’s CrossFit Games, competitors were challenged in swimming, biking, gymnastics, running, strength and more. Points are awarded based on completion time in comparison to their peers, and the number of reps completed if you are not able to finish the event prior to the time cap.

Each workout is designed to test and push people to their limits. Unfortunately, we saw several top competitors suffer injuries along the way. Fan favorite, Sara Sigmundsdóttir, pushed through her rib injury for a couple events before being forced to withdraw from competition. We also saw Josh Bridges and Stephanie Chung’s performance deteriorate as each event was held.

Athletes were given 4 shoes to choose from as they competed. Despite having a few options, the majority of athletes favored the Reebok CrossFit Nano 8 Flexweave. The Reebok Nano 8 is the most versatile and dependable shoe in the CrossFit space. This would be one to consider adding to your shoe line-up for your cross-training workouts.

After 18 events, only three athletes would be crowned the Fittest On Earth at the Reebok CrossFit Games. In the team category, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom took the win accumulating 900 points during the games. For the women, Tia-Clair Toomey scored 1,154 points and secured her title as the Fittest Woman on Earth. Back-to-Back CrossFit Games Champion, Mat Fraser,  defend his title as the Fittest Man on Earth. Can I get a 3-peat?

RUNNERS > CROSSFITTERS

As runners, entering the world of CrossFit was a learning experience. One thing we loved was how the CrossFit Games, and CrossFit gyms across the country see the value of running and are adding more running into their workouts and competitions.

So if CrossFit is focusing on adding running, we believe we should dedicate more time to focus on our cross-training. Over the weekend, we participated in a couple of CrossFit workouts at CrossFit Recursive in Madison (thank you for hosting us)! The workouts were tough, but the value was long-lasting.

Adding weights to your workout can help prevent injury, improve your strength, and boost your speed. Although you might not be ready to jump on the CrossFit trend, don’t forget to mix in cross-training into your workout!

A SAMPLE CROSSFIT WORKOUT

In case you need a place to start, here is one of the workouts we completed at CrossFit Recursive. We love it because it has a strong running and cardio base! It is an easy one to get started with.

**Repeat this as many times as you can in 30 minutes. This workout is about endurance, so always try to remember to keep moving. Beware of starting at too fast of a pace because you will most likely burnout at the end. At the end, record how many times you make it through the series. If you make it through part of the series, add the completed reps as part of your score. This will be your performance benchmark that you can work on improving as you get stronger

If you end up loving this workout, CrossFit posts the Workout of the Day (WOD) online that you can access for FREE!

Although the workouts are free online, what gets people excited about CrossFit is the communities that are built in the gym. CrossFit affiliates have grown to about 14,500 gyms worldwide. If you are interested in joining, you can find the nearest CrossFit Box over at the CrossFit website.

It’s safe to say that we at JackRabbit loved learning more about the CrossFit community at the Reebok Crossfit Games, and encourage our community of runners to consider this sport for cross-training days!
